A 90kW ETA wood chip boiler was installed on a pig farm near Frome in Somerset as a heating station. A purpose built wood chip store and boiler house were erected to protect the system.
Of critical importance was the fact that the boiler must be capable of running 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year to minimise weaner mortality.
A secondary request was for the boiler to burn Miscanthus (Elephant Grass). The boiler was fitted with flue recirculation in order to burn the high dry matter material.
The boiler was also required to provide the farm house and a neighbour’s house with heat and hot water.
Due to the lower burning point of Miscanthus the boilers output will be down to approximately 70% of its total rated capacity. The idea being:
1. To use a cheaper form of biomass during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months.
2. Allow the boiler to burn woodchips to run at full capacity in the Winter.
The two houses were plumbed in to the system using 45kW Alfa Laval heat exchangers all supplied by Uponor underground pipe in pipe insulated main at a total distance of 90 metres. A 5,000 litre accumulator tank was used for the circulatory system.
The farm is not only saving £100 per week on oil but is also selling heat and hot water to the neighbour. The farm is eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive payment scheme.
Raehills, a privately owned country house and sporting estate.
“This year we have installed an ETA boiler here at Raehills, replacing the two old oil boilers and fueling the new boiler from wood that has been harvested on the estate. It has worked very well providing a level of warmth that we have not had before.
It is difficult to compare like for like, as before we run the boilers on a limited timed basis, but are now running the boiler 24/7 and keeping the house at a steady temperature. Last year we used around 30,000 litres of Kerosene, which equates at current prices to about £15,000.
(ETA Hack 130kW wood chip boiler)
I will know how much wood we get through in the spring, but I estimate about 150 tonnes. It costs about £30/tonne to make the chip, so the cost of running will be in the region of £5,500 per annum including the electricity costs. This represents a significant saving to us, and if oil starts to return to the levels that we saw a couple of years ago, the difference will get bigger”
(Woodchip being transported into the fuel store)
A nearly completed installation for a large detached house. An ETA Hack, 60kW wood log boiler was selected with a 60kW oil boiler as a standby. The ETA log boiler is the lead boiler, with the oil boiler coming on when needed. Mains pressure domestic hot water is also supplied via heat exchangers.
We also added a 500lt pressurised cold water store, to ensure sufficient volume of pressurised water for the numerous bathrooms in the property.
The fuel supply for the log boiler is taken from the estates fallen trees and felled timber. Briquettes can also be used.
